Attend the first public reading of a new play by acclaimed comedy writer Alex Goldberg (I’m In Love with Your Wife, Stock Home, Fearsome Sketch Comedy).

The Final Jew, a dark historical comedy, begins in the year 2032 as Marvin Black witnesses his own funeral and is quickly spirited away to the customs office of the afterlife.  As he is processed it is revealed that not only was Marvin the last survivor of the Holocaust to die, but in a strange cosmic twist the customs official processing his entry into the afterlife is Adolf Hitler.  Throughout the interview and interrogation Marvin must forgive Hitler of his crimes against humanity, execute him, or relive his own life with the shadow of Hitler always by his side.

THE ADVENTURES OF RICK BRICKMAN, co-written by Michael Pace, won the Bronze medal in the sitcom category of the 2009 PAGE Screenwriting Awards.  World domination to follow.

LYING NAKED, a one-act play about a couple and their late night activities, will receive a staged reading in the New Ground Reading Series November 7th and 8th at the theater at 45 Bleecker Street.

BROAD DAYLIGHT will be produced in a one-act play festival in New York in March or April of 2010.

Progress:

*BROAD DAYLIGHT has been translated into Mandarin and will be performed in Taiwan in early October. 

*APAC (Astoria Performing Arts Center) announced that THE FINAL JEW will have a staged reading in this season’s The 15/20s: Staged Readings of New Works on Thursday, December 10th.

*THE ADVENTURES OF RICK BRICKMAN was named a finalist in the Page Screenwriting Awards.  Out of hundreds of submissions in the sitcom pilot category, BRICKMAN is now in the top ten.

Added bonus: a new full-length play is complete, and a new TV sitcom pilot is almost complete.   Stay tuned…

Naturally, things slow down in the summer (with the exception of molasses and wet concrete, both of which come to a complete stop in summer).  However, things are happening and without specific concrete dates in mind, there are definitely updates with various writing projects:

* BREAKDOWN IN BABEL is currently being adapted into a graphic novel by Gus Ferrari.  In addition, it is being rewritten as a short film and will be shot this fall.

* BROAD DAYLIGHT, an unproduced short play, is currently being translated and adapted for the world premiere in Taiwan.

* THE FINAL JEW, an unproduced full-length play, will get a staged public reading with a wonderful theater company during their 2009-10 reading series.

* STOCK HOME will get a staged public reading with a wonderful theater company in Chicago during their 2009-10 reading series for consideration in their following season.

* THE ADVENTURES OF RICK BRICKMAN, a sitcom pilot co-written with Michael Pace, has made it through the first three rounds of a writing competition, and out of hundreds is one of the remaining 25 scripts under consideration.

More updates to come, and more new writing projects are underway.

Fearsome performs a set at the debut night of The Repeat Offenders Sketch Comedy Show, an evening of sketch, stand-up, and comedy songs.  Last chance to see Fearsome for a while, as Chris leaves for his month-long honeymoon next week.

My sofabed survived over two decades of regular and irregular wear and tear.  When my family first purchased it, custom made from a distant family member who designs furniture, Reagan was still in office and I still thought I was going to make it in the N.B.A.  Since then it has moved numerous times, with my parents, then to me while living in Virginia, then back to my parents, and finally to my apartment in New York.  Now that it is undesirable as a sofa and a bed, I finally decided to put it out of its misery.  I desperately tried to pawn it off on Craigslist and wrote the following, hoping that someone would enjoy the ad enough to take it off my hands.

3. It may be the most uncomfortable bed in the history of sofabeds. All night your guest will think about that bar rigidly set in the middle of their back. The last few people with the honor of sleeping on that couch quickly elected to fold it back up and sleep on the cushions. Which partially explains #1 and 2.

4. The sofabed is 20 years old. That’s a lot of ass.

5. This sofabed was originally used by my family in Virginia. If you still hold a grudge from The Civil War, this is not the item of furniture for you.

6. You would be responsible for moving it. It will take two strong people, at least. Maybe 3.

1988 – 2009

My short play Breakdown in Babel has made it to the semifinals of The Network One Act Competition.  There are two performances in front of the general public and industry judges, and both get to vote.  Performances are Thursday, March 19th at 6:00pm and Saturday, March 21st at 11:00am (yep, that’s in the morning).  Come check it out and vote Babel on to the finals.
